Since 1991, the 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence campaign has taken place every year, starting on November 25th , on the day of Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ending on Human Rights Day on December 10th . The Centre for Women’s Global Leadership has coordinated this global event since it began in 1991. Since 2004 the GBV Prevention Network has been leading regional organizing with members through the Action and Advocacy Kits.
The 2021, 16 Days of Activism Campaign focuses on Rest. Activists all over the Horn, East and Southern Africa, work tirelessly to prevent VAW every day and have heightened our activism during the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for the past 17 years! We have risked burnout to make an immense contribution to the field of VAW prevention and towards making the world a safer place for all women and girls. While much work remains to be done, our contribution as activists at the frontline of violence against women (VAW) is priceless and should be celebrated – we’ve come a long way! It is time to rest, reflect and reset.
