Combined Structural Interventions for Gender Equality and Livelihood Security: A Critical Review of the Evidence from Southern and Eastern Africa and the Implications for Young People

Evidence shows that behavioral HIV prevention interventions targeted at reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS are only one part of the answer. More focus on structural interventions is needed. This article highlights the most pressing structural issues that impact the development of HIV/AIDS in Southern and Eastern Africa: gender inequality and livelihood insecurity. A review of interventions combining livelihood strengthening and gender transformation to prevent HIV is given.
