Marriage a Barrier to ARV Treatment for Swazi Women

In a study conducted by MarxART, a project by the Swaziland National AIDS Programme (SNAP),  it has been found that distinct socio-cultural challenges faced by women before initiating ART that result in specific gendered decision making patterns affect their access to medical treatment for fear of violence from their partners. According to researcher Thandeka Dlamini, in this conservative country, where women were considered minors until not long ago, wives must obey their husbands, even if they oppose ART or prefer traditional medicine.
